The first appointment

We got to go to our first Midwife appointment on Friday. They covered a lot of the “basics” and then we got to hear the baby’s heartbeat. She didn’t know if she would be able to find it, but as soon as she tried, we could hear the heartbeat – 180 beats-per-minute… She said it must be an active baby – Maybe we’re gonna have a little athlete! :) Then we went to a cabin with some of the people from Homebuilders for the weekend. None of them knew we were pregnant, so I mentioned that we had an ultrasound last week… They were a little puzzled at first but then realized we had an ultrasound because we were pregnant! I think there are only 2 couples now in our group who haven’t been pregnant in the past year!

The book we are reading that shows us what the baby looks like said that the baby more than doubled in size this past week. It also said that by the end of this week, pretty much all of the baby’s features/organs will be developed, and from here on out it will just keep growing – pretty amazing! By the end of this week we will be entering the second trimester!

4th of July

We had a very relaxing day off together yesterday – we didn’t do too much. Emily made some brownies because we were going to go on a picnic with Tony and Tessa. She made the mistake of eating a little bit of a brownie because it made her really sick… I felt so bad for her. This was really the first time the pregnancy has caused her to be sick.

So, we didn’t go on the picnic and just spent the rest of the night together.

I feel bad that she got sick, but since she’s been doing so well, this was kind of a nice sign to remind us that she really is pregnant!

The secret slips out

We went to the lake with the Rodgers and the Lubichs on Saturday. We rode up to the lake with the Lubichs, and Jeremy had made a comment like “this time next year I wonder if any of us will start having kids” – Emily and I looked at each other and almost told him, but we resisted.

Later on Emily and I were with Jen and we told her – it was a lot of fun to tell a friend – she was very excited. We told Jeremy when we got back into the car to go home, and Jen said it was so hard for her to keep quiet the whole day :) They were both very happy for us.

We’re still keeping our secret quiet for a little while longer. Sometimes it is very hard not to just shout it out, but we somehow manage.

It is still hard to believe that we are going to have a baby, but we are getting more and more excited. I often wonder what kind of a dad will I be? If it’s a little girl, it will be very hard to enforce the rules, I think ;)

I got to tell someone!

Emily and I were thinking that we should probably tell Dr. Rob our chiropractor sometime soon that we were going to have a baby. Emily got to tell someone already, so she said it was my turn. So when I went in yesterday I was trying to think of a way to bring it up. But Dr. Rob was talking about something and said “… so when the time comes when you think you are going to start a family…” I just said, “Well… actually…” :) It was pretty funny, because he said, “Are you???”

He was very happy for us, and I think he can make some good recommendations (like nutrition, etc) for Emily.
